RIVERSIDE, Calif. — It's been a good year for Lennie Zalesky.
Not only did he lead California Baptist University to two team championships, a third-place finish at the NCAA Division II Championship and an individual national championship, Zalesky will be inducted into two hall of fame classes this year: the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame on April 9 and the California Wrestling Hall of Fame on May 5.
This past year, CBU enjoyed one of its best at the NCAA level, winning its second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and Super Region IV Championships, finishing third at the NCAA Division II Championship and seeing its third individual NCAA champion. Under Zalesky, the Lancers have gone 62-41-1 and have seen 30 wrestlers grab All-American honors, along with seven individual national championships.
During his wrestling days, the Iowa native won a state title at Cedar Rapids Prairie High School before claiming three Big Ten titles at the University of Iowa. He was also a three-time All-American and two-time runner up during his time with the Hawks.
After college, Zalesky went on to coach at his alma mater, where he served under the legendary Dan Gable from 1986-90. Zalesky took over the head coaching position at UC Davis in 2001, where he coached for 10 years before coming to CBU. He led dozens of Aggies to Pac-10 Conference places, including four conference champions and sent 27 student-athletes to the NCAA Championships.
In 2007, the Aggies enjoyed their highest-ever showing at the D-I tournament, finishing in a tie for 22nd place. Helping that cause was senior 141-pounder and current CBU assistant coach Derek Moore, who captured the program's first D-I individual title.
Along with the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame and the California Wrestling Hall of Fame, Zalesky was also inducted into the Alaska Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2010.
