RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Ever since California Baptist University transitioned to the NCAA Division II in 2013-14, it has continued to impress and improve each year. In just four years as a fully-fledged member, the Lancers grabbed their highest placement in the Division II Learfield Directors' Cup as the No. 2 athletic program in all of Division II.
"We are thrilled with our second place finish in the prestigious Learfield Directors Cup, to finish No. 2 out of 286 institutions is amazing in itself," said CBU Director of Athletics Dr. Micah Parker. "We enjoyed a tremendously successful year in 2016-17. We won seven conference championships, crowned an individual NCAA wrestling national championship and captured our fifth PacWest Commissioners Cup. This is a demonstration to the hard work and tireless dedication by our 400-plus student-athletes, coaches, trainers and administration. We are blessed with the tremendous support of our President Dr. Ronald Ellis and this is a testament to his vision and leadership. I want to add congratulations to Grand Valley State University on their historic accomplishment as well."
The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports – seven men's and seven women's. In CBU's first year at Division II, it finished 26th overall. The next year, the Lancers jumped up 10 spots to No. 16 and followed that up with a 12-place bump last year, finishing fourth overall.
CBU finished with 750.25 points, just sitting below Grand Valley State. A bulk of the Lancers' points came in the winter after both basketball teams qualified for the West Region tournaments – with the women advancing out of the region to the Final Four, wrestling took third overall at the Division II Championships, men's swim/dive grabbed 12th and women's swim/dive placed 14th. Together, the winter sports accumulated 330.5 points for CBU.
This past spring, the Lancer men's golf team won its first-ever West/South Regional Championship and went on to take 10th as a team at the national championship. CBU's softball, baseball and women's golf teams qualified for their fourth-straight regional tournaments. The Lancer track program saw a program-best seven athletes compete at the national stage, with three runners putting themselves on the podium.
Earlier in the year, CBU's cross country teams both qualified as teams for the national championship meet for the first time in program history. The men took 15th overall, while the women defied their rankings and came in ninth overall – their highest finish ever.
