CHICO, Calif. — If there's one word to describe California Baptist University's softball team this season, it's resilient. Whenever the Lancers found themselves with their backs against the wall, they dug deep and put up a battle each and every time.
No. 19-ranked CBU did that once again Friday afternoon, taking Chico State all the way to the end, but dropped a 4-3 loss to end an incredible season. The Lancers end the year 36-13, while the Wildcats get to keep playing with a 38-17 record.
Chico State took a 4-0 lead after three innings, but CBU never stopped fighting, just waiting to break through.
London Miller got the ball rolling with a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the sixth, sending it sailing over the fence at left field. Brittany Galvez followed by getting on base after the Wildcat second baseman couldn't field the ball cleanly.
The Wildcats got one out, but Ali Subia singled up the middle to keep the rally going. Liz Dickson took over running and Amanda Springstead advanced the runners to second and third, sacrificing a hit. Galvez then came home on a passed ball, cutting Chico State's lead to just two runs.
In the top of the seventh, Chico State threatened to tack on some more runs, putting runners at second and third. The next Wildcat made contact with the ball, but Krista Mann collected it cleanly and hurled it home, allowing Erin Burkhart to tag the runner and keep CBU within reach as the Lancers got out of the inning without conceding another run.
Needing two runs to keep the game alive, Mann gave CBU a big spark with a leadoff double to right center. She moved to third, despite Chico State getting the next two outs. It allowed Miller to send her home with a base hit to right center, pulling CBU within 4-3.
It was the closest the Lancers would get, however, as the Wildcats managed to get the third out to secure the 4-3 result.
