Lancers Sweep Regional Championships

STOCKTON, Calif. – Winners of three regular-season events already, California Baptist University wanted to add another trophy – one bigger than all the others – to its haul this year.
Even with a double-digit stroke lead, the 14th-ranked Lancers remained aggressive to win the program's first-ever postseason championship as an NCAA program at the Division II West/South Central Regional in the third and final round Wednesday at the Brookside Country Club.
"Anytime you win a region championship it's very special, it's very hard to win a region championship," Coach TL Brown said. "I am really proud of the team effort we had from all five guys. We are just blessed to have an opportunity to compete and we give the glory to God."
CBU set a new program 54-hole tournament score record in the process at 30-under-par 834 (274-273-287), updating the previous record of 848 it set at the PacWest Championships last time out when it took second in the conference.
"I felt our preparation coming in was really solid," Brown said. "We felt after not winning the conference championship we had a chip on our shoulder a little bit. I really think we came out gunning for this golf
course. I am really proud of how we responded, off the tee box and with our wedges we were great this week."
Trevor Lampson shattered CBU's previous 54-hole tournament record of 208 to win the program's first individual NCAA region championship with a 15-under-par 201 (62-69-70) on Wednesday.
"Trevor was taking some really aggressive lines off the tee, and his driver was really special this week," Brown said. "When other guys were hitting approach shots, he was ripping it over bunkers. His putter was solid in round one, that 62 was really special. He was really in the zone, so we let him do his thing."
Greg Gonzalez would have also broke CBU's 54-hole record, with an 11-under 205 (67-66-72) that sealed him a fourth-place finish individually. Kendel Hodges shot five-under 211 (72-67-72) to take 15th for the Lancers.
"Greg had an incredible week for us," Brown said. "He kept grinding for his team and I am really proud of him."
Overall, CBU shot one-under-par 287 as a team in the final round on Wednesday, with all five golfers hitting at least a 74 and three going under par.
Lampson carded six birdies, starting with two on holes four and seven, to shoot two-under 70. The redshirt freshman played the first six holes of the back nine four-under, with birdies at 10, 12, 13 and 15. It completed his rewrite of the Lancer record book, as he now holds the program's 18-hole (62), 36-hole (131) and 54-hole scoring records.
"Trevor was very special this week," Brown said, "he's had a special year."
Gonzalez birdied four times on Wednesday and played his last five holes one-under to finish with an even-par 72. Hodges matched Gonzalez with a 72 in the third round, with three birdies and an eagle at 18.
Christian Sanders birdied twice to complete the scoring for CBU, with a 73. It gave him a 217 (73-71-73) on the week for 50th-place finish. Tai Kuida birdied four times for a 74 on Wednesday and 223 (75-74-74) overall.
"Christian played really well, I was happy with how he brought it back," Brown said. "They were just a lot of great things that happened this week, with all those eagles. We just had a ton of team depth."
The Lancers won the tournament by 11 strokes, with Stanislaus State (845), Cal State East Bay (847), Western Washington (847) and Cal State Monterey Bay (848) also advancing to the Division II Championships in Kissimmee, Fla. at The Reunion Resort May 22-26.
"I told the team the motivation to win the region is to get seeded with some really good teams at nationals," Brown said. "It pairs us with the other region champions at nationals, and that's what we want."
