GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A late and improbable rally nearly led California Baptist University to the verge of a repeat Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship on the final day of the conference meet.
Two victories and a ton of depth led the 16th-ranked Lancers back from a near-70 point deficit heading into the final day of the RMAC Championships. Host Colorado Mesa escaped with a 32.5-point win over CBU, 987.5-955. Oklahoma Baptist took third (861) and Colorado School of Mines finished fourth (508.5).
Scott Tolman came home with the RMAC Swimming and Diving Freshman of the Year award after he won another individual event on Saturday. The true freshman won the 200-yard breaststroke with a big cushion and set a new pool record with an NCAA Division II consideration time of one minute, 59.11 seconds.
The Lancers also ended the week on a high note with a victory in the 400-free relay. Justin Quiroga, Bernardo Valentim, David Ring and Alexis Ohmar won the final race of the meet in 2:59.11, which was good for another B cut.
Two more medal finishes were provided by Ohmar and Adrien Deloffre, who took third in the 100 free (44.78) and 200 breast (2:01.96), respectively. CBU secured three top-10 finishes in the 100 free, with Valentim (45.15) and Ring (45.76) logging B-cut times, along with Ohmar, in fifth and ninth place.
Led by Christian Britton in sixth place (1:52.55), the Lancers had five swimmers score in the 200 backstroke. Brandon Schuster finished seventh (1:52.57), Quiroga touched in ninth (1:53.21), Adrian Gutierrez took 10th (1:55.07) and Chris Sands came in 14th (2:03.78).
More points came from Reese Gonzales (2:11.89) and Sands (2:32.03) in the 200 breast, as the duo took 14th and 16th, respectively.
