RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- California Baptist University was on the verge of advancing to the championship round of the NCAA Division II West Regional against Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday morning, but still has one more chance to get there.
The top-seeded Lancers will have to play again tonight for that right after dropping a drama-packed game to the third-seeded and 26th-ranked Broncos, 6-5, in 10 innings. CBU will face the winner of Saturday afternoon's Dixie State and Cal State Monterey Bay game tonight at 7:00 p.m., with that victor advancing to the championship round with defending region champions Cal Poly Pomona.
If CBU advances to the championship round, it would be played Monday. If Dixie State or Cal State Monterey Bay advances, the game would be played on Sunday. The first game is set for a 2 p.m. start regardless, with an if-necessary game at 6 p.m.
Stephen Lohr and Antonio Chavarria both batted 2-for-4 for the Lancers. Lohr scored twice and Chavarria drove in two runs.
There were three ties and two lead changes between the Lancers and Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona went ahead in the first inning, but CBU tied it up in the second inning. Ryan Williams was hit by a pitch with two outs and Andrew Montoya moved him to third with a single to center field. An error brought Williams home to cap the two-out rally.
CBU took its first lead, 2-1, with a run in the top of the third. Lohr drew a one-out walk and consecutive singles from Chavarria and Mark Sanchez scored him.
In the fifth, a two-run homer from Chavarria, which also plated Lohr after his one-out single, gave the Lancers the largest lead of the game, 4-1.
The Broncos kept coming and tied the game with a three-run homer in the bottom half of the inning. Bryce Macy landed a big blow, though, when he hit a solo shot to leadoff the seventh to put his team back in front, 5-4.
Cal Poly Pomona rallied back late and scored in the ninth and 10th innings to secure the victory.
