RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In an unprecedented run of success, California Baptist University has won its third-straight and fourth PacWest Commissioner's Cup, announced Wednesday by the conference office. In an extremely tight race, it all came down to the final day of the PacWest regular season.
Since joining the conference during the 2011-12 season and winning their first Commissioner's Cup the same year, the Lancers have won the Cup four times. Last year's third Cup made CBU the first program to win three and this year the Lancers even bettered themselves. CBU has never finished outside of the top two in the standings.
"I'm proud of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff for winning the cup three years in a row," said Dr. Micah Parker, CBU Director of Athletics. "Particularly, this group of senior athletes has been consistently outstanding in PacWest competition. The PacWest Conference continues to get better each year, so we've had to keep improving also. This accomplishment is a true blessing."
The PacWest Commissioner's Cup was established in 2007-08 to honor the athletic program with the best overall performance in that academic year. The standings are updated three times a year following the fall, winter and spring seasons. The competition is based upon average finish instead of point totals, a change that occurred prior to the 2009-10 season. Each school's points are totaled and then divided by the number of PacWest athletic programs it offers, giving an overall average finish for the school.
After sitting in second place following the fall season, CBU moved up to the top spot after the Lancers women's basketball team won its second PacWest Championship. Both men's and women's cross country teams won PacWest titles in the fall, while in the spring, CBU's baseball and women's golf won conference titles to secure the Commissioner's Cup for the Lancers. Baseball's came in dramatic fashion against rival Azusa Pacific, as it won the conference crown on the final day of the season, which also secured the Cup for CBU.
