LITCHFIELD, Ariz. – For the second year in a row, California Baptist University has won the PacWest Championship and advances on to the NCAA Division II Regional playoffs. The Lancers had an encore, as freshman Erica Wang won the individual championship on a playoff hole, with the four other CBU golfers earning All-Tournament honors.
The Lancers dominated the eight-team conference to secure first place by 40 strokes at the Wigwam Golf Course. CBU turned in a 302 on Wednesday to finish up with a team score of 910 (309-299-302). Academy of Art wound up in second place with a 950. CBU now waits for the NCAA Division II postseason, which will run May 4-6 at a site to be determined.
"The ladies put on a dominating display of golf for three days," Coach John Hackney said. "Our ladies are playing some fantastic golf, so we are really looking forward to the NCAA Tournament."
Wang's title came with a little more work, as she rallied from a three-shot setback going into the final 18 holes with a one-over 73. It gave the Corona native a 224 (78-73-73) to tie her with the previous tournament leader Michelle Picca of Point Loma. Down by two shots with two to play, Wang used great approach shots on 17 and 18 to save par, while Picca bogeyed both after hitting into a water hazard to leave both tied after regulation.
It brought it all down to a final playoff hole, as Wang and Picca replayed 18. Both made it on to the green safely, but Wang two-putted her way home, while Picca was unable to do so to give Wang the victory on four shots to Picca's five.
"Erica just had a fantastic tournament," Hackney said. "What a special win for an outstanding young lady. She played brilliantly and came through in the clutch. All of us are just thrilled for her."
CBU lead in just about every statistic, including most birdies (23) and pars (165) in the tournament. Everyone played a part for the Lancers, who had all five golfers in the top nine. After Wang, Marvi Monsalve took third, Tayler Hoag tied for fourth, Laura Scrivner took seventh and Natalie Park ended in ninth.
Wang collected the most pars for an individual at the tournament at 38 and sank five birdie putts, as well. She also led the charts in lowest scores for individuals on all par-three (3.25) and par-five holes (4.83).
Like Wang, Monsalve had her best round on the final day with a two-over 74. It gave her a 229 total (75-80-74), she finished with five birdies and 33 pars, while shooting even-par on all par-five holes.
Hoag shot 230 (76-77-77) overall and and collected the second-most pars at Wigwam (36) on the week. The senior also averaged the third-lowest score on all par threes (3.33) and par fours (4.27).
Scrivner put up an impressive 235 (80-73-82) in her tie for seventh, while Park posted a 239 (85-76-78) for ninth. It was truly a total team effort.
"Marvi came back with a great round today, Tayler put another solid number on the board and Park was brilliant," Hackney said.
