SAINT GEORGE, Utah — In do-or-die fashion, No. 11-ranked California Baptist University showed heart Saturday morning despite going down eight runs, but couldn't pull off the dramatic comeback.
No. 4-ranked Dixie State walked away with a 9-3 victory to advance to the NCAA Division II Super Regional for the second year in a row, improving to 47-7 overall. The Lancers end their season with a 42-11 record on the year.
"I thought we came out well, just couldn't hold them down," said head coach
Bill Baber. "We've battled back before and had a lot of comebacks this year, so we knew we could battle again. We kept working hard just couldn't get all the way back."
Krista Mann gave CBU its first hit of the game in the bottom of the first, but the Lancers couldn't get her round to leave her stranded.
Like they had the last time these two teams met, the Red Storm put together a big inning in the third, scoring three runs, and added five more in the fifth to put pressure on CBU.
In order to avoid the mercy-rule loss, the Lancers needed to score at least one run in the bottom half of the frame. With a runner on second,
Jordan Mowatt knocked a double to score the much-needed run to keep the game alive.
The CBU defense shut down the Red Storm in the top of the sixth to keep momentum in its favor and took to offense once more. Mowatt provided the spark once again, doubling to the gap in left field to score two runners, cutting the deficit to 8-3.
Dixie State managed to score one more run in the top of the seventh and kept the Lancers off the board in the bottom half of the frame to end the game 9-3 in favor of the No. 2-seeded Red Storm.
