ST. GEORGE, Utah — A year after falling just short of a PacWest title, California Baptist University wanted to leave nothing to chance at the 2015 PacWest Championships. It led to the Lancers winning the conference crown by 34 strokes Wednesday at the Sunbrook Golf Club.
Four CBU golfers reaped PacWest All-Tournament honors by placing in the individual top-10 and helping the Lancers card a 900 over three rounds, which is the the fourth-best score at a three-round tournament in the history of the program. It also sends CBU into the NCAA Division II postseason for the second year in a row. The Lancers enter as the fifth-ranked team in the West Region and No. 14 team in the division.
CBU led the tournament wire-to-wire, posting the best team round each day, including a 304 to wrap things up. Second-place Dixie State and No. 3 Academy of Art were not even in the same neighborhood with a respective 934 (313-311-310) and 935 (315-305-315).
"We are extremely proud of our ladies for putting on a dominating performance from start to finish in capturing the conference crown," Coach John Hackney said. "They really played some superb golf and we had contributions from everyone, which is important as we begin what will hopefully be a long run through the postseason."
While there was no drama over what team would capture the conference title coming into Wednesday, the right to be named the individual champion came down to a playoff hole. Tina Yang was one stroke off matching the record for lowest three-round tournament score. It still was not enough to outdo Dixie State's Haley Dunn, who birdied the playoff hole at 17 to claim medalist honors in the tournament. Both Yang and Dunn finished with identical four-over-par 220s in the tournament. Yang charged back into contention with a one-over 73 Wednesday, while Dunn shot 74 on the day.
Even with Yang's stellar performance, she was one-upped in the third round by teammate Tayler Hoag's even-par 72. It rallied Hoag from an 11th-place standing on the first day to a fourth-place finish overall, with a 224 (78-74-72).
Natalie Park claimed her first All-PacWest honor by making the all-tournament team with a 230 (73-76-81), which left her in sixth place. Laura Scrivner continued her inspired play, as well for the Lancers, to take the final all-tournament spot at No. 10 with a 233 (80-75-78).
Marvi Monsalve ended up just outside the all-tournament team in 12th in the end with a 237 (75-74-88) for CBU.
"Tina really had an excellent tournament, and Tayler played some great golf, as well," Hackney said. "It was really nice that we had four girls make the all-tournament team. Now it's time to take some finals and get ready for the regionals hosted by Sonoma State."
