Final Box Score
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Wrestling took center stage on California Baptist University's front lawn Saturday afternoon, as the Lancers opened up their season against Stanford with their first annual "Take It Outside" dual. While CBU fought hard before falling to the Cardinal, 27-9, the program put on a record-setting event as the standing-room-only crowd of 2,620—which included mixed martial arts legend and world champion Urijah Faber—helped set an attendance record for an outdoor collegiate wrestling dual.
CBU, which is ranked No. 18 in the NCAA Division II polls, picked up three victories in the 10-match event and battled within two points on two other occasions, making the final 27-9 score much closer than it appears. Christian Betancourt, Alec Smith and Jacob Waste all earned decision victories over their opponents for the Lancers.
"I am happy with the attendance, that's a record, even in spite of the rain," said Coach Lennie Zalesky, as it had rained about two hours before the event and then stopped for good. "It was a great event.
"We maybe could have won a match or two more, but every one of these matches were tough. All 10 guys in [Stanford's] lineup were top-10 recruits at least in their weight classes coming out of high school."
Betancourt, a junior transfer from Mt. SAC, earned match-of-the-day honors for CBU against Stanford's Mason Pengilly. The two opened the dual with plenty of drama and excitement at 125 pounds, as the one-point win came down to a video review in the final seconds.
Down 3-1 heading into the third period, Betancourt notched a reversal 11 seconds in to tie things up. With 1:14 to go, Betancourt earned an escape to take a 4-3 edge before Pengilly went up 5-4 with a takedown in the final 18 seconds. Two seconds later, the Lancers lightweight tallied another escape to tie things at 5-5, but Pengilly still held a 6-5 lead with riding time in consideration.
With time running out, Betancourt caught Pengilly on his back and fought for control, the takedown and the win but time appeared to run out before he could do so. The official ruled the match ended before Betancourt established top position, but Zalesky and his staff challenged the call and, with the help of video review, the call was overturned and Betancourt earned the 7-6 decision victory.
"It was a historic day in two ways, that's the first time I've won a video review ever," Zalesky joked.
With a 3-0 lead in the dual overall, Peter Cunningham fought to keep the Lancers in front against Connor Schram at 133. Cunningham also trailed by two, 6-4, heading to the third and tallied an escape 21 seconds into the frame. Try as he might, Cunningham could not take down Schram to force overtime as the Cardinal tied the dual 3-3 on Schram's 7-5 win with riding time added.
The 141 match brought the same result in extra time, as Alex Anunciation tangled with Stanford's Isaiah Locsin. Anunciation, who qualified for last year's NCAA Division II Championships, took down Locsin 34 seconds into the second period for a 4-2 lead and took a 5-4 edge into the third. Locsin got his escape in the third to force the match into overtime and then picked up a takedown 25 seconds into the extra frame for the 7-5 win and a 6-3 Stanford dual advantage.
Smith stopped a 9-0 Stanford run for the Lancers when he earned a 7-3 win over Peter Galli at 165. The junior returner was taken down 39 seconds in but battled for the 3-2 lead with an escape and takedown of his own. Galli tied things at 3-3 before the first period ended and the score remained even as the next frame went by without a point. Smith heated up down the stretch and enjoyed a 4-0 run over the final two minutes for the 7-3 victory.
With the win, CBU pulled within 13-6 before a major decision for the Cardinal gave it a 17-6 lead going into the 184-pound match -- Waste vs. Garet Krohn. Waste jumped out to a 5-1 cushion on Krohn in the first two periods with a pair of takedowns and an escape. The lead was insurmountable, as Waste picked up the 7-4 decision to keep comeback hopes alive for the Lancers, trailing 17-9 with two matches to go.
However, Stanford closed out the dual with consecutive wins to hold on for the 27-9 victory.
"All these guys were tough," Zalesky said. "These are the type of guys we are going to have to face at the end of the year when it comes down to make All-American or moving on to the NCAAs, so it's good to get that experience in early."
