SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. --- The 2012 Preseason All-PacWest Softball Team and the 2012 Predicted Order of Finish were released on Thursday during the PacWest Softball Media Day broadcast and California Baptist University was tabbed third.
The Lancers received two first place votes in the coaches' poll, garnering 83 points. The two teams which finished with a share of the PacWest title last season were picked ahead of the Lancers. Hawaii Pacific was picked first with 91 points and a total of four first place votes. Dixie State was picked second with 89 points and three first place votes.
Both teams finished last season with a conference record of 23-5, with the HPU Sea Warriors getting the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by way of a head-to-head tiebreaker. HPU was 38-12 overall last year, while the Red Storm finished 33-14.
The Lancers make their debut in the conference after winning an eighth straight GSAC title last season, going 66-5 overall, 18-2 in conference.
Anna Cue of Dixie State was chosen as the Preseason Player of the Year and Breanne Patton of HPU was chosen as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
CBU returns 11 players from last year's roster, five of which earned NAIA All-American honors. The CBU returners include NAIA Pitcher of the Year Emma Holden, GSAC Player of the Year Lindsay Henry and the Lancers' all-time leading home run hitter Kendall Gorham. Bill Baber begins his first season at the helm after serving as an assistant under Mike Smith for the past eight seasons.
The Lancers open the 2012 season Friday at Cal State San Bernardino.
