PHOENIX, Ariz. --- The first standings in the race for the Pacific West Conference Commissioner's Cup have been released, and California Baptist University has surged into the lead.
On the strength of four conference titles in the fall, the Lancers lead Grand Canyon by six points and a 1.2 average, racking up 47 points and a 9.4 average. CBU won conference titles in men's and women's soccer and men's and women's cross country in its first year in the PacWest.
The Commissioner's Cup is based upon average finish instead of total points. Each school totals its points and then divides it by the number of PacWest programs it offers, giving an overall average. The Lancers tallied 47 points in five sports, giving them their 9.4 average.
The Lancers won the PacWest title outright in women's soccer and men's and women's cross country. They shared the men's soccer title with Hawaii Pacific. They also finished tied for third in volleyball to produce an average finish of better than second place for the entire fall season.
Grand Canyon has 41 points (8.2 average). BYU-Hawaii is third with an 8.0 average (40 points).
CBU is one of six programs that compete in 10 of the conference's 11 sports. The other four (Hawaii Pacific, Dixie State, Grand Canyon and Academy of Art) all compete in all 11 PacWest sports.
Hawaii Pacific has won the last two Commissioner's Cups. Hawaii Hilo won the inaugural trophy in 2007-08, and BYU-Hawaii won it in 2008-09.
