El Cajon, Calif. --- Technically San Diego Christian has never defeated California Baptist University. The last time the Hawks knocked off CBU, SDCC was known as Christian Heritage. That streak of eight straight wins by the Lancers (4-2, 1-0 GSAC) almost came to an end, but CBU picked up its first road win and opened Golden State Athletic Conference play with a 75-68 win over San Diego Christian.
Elisha Taylor knew that she would be called upon more this year after the departure of one of best scorers in school history, but Taylor was expected to fill a possible void at point. The sophomore had scored no more than four points in a single game until her 10-point performance against No. 23 Carroll (Mont.) a couple of weeks ago. Taylor doubled her career high against SDCC with 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field to lead all scorers. Taylor became the fourth Lancer this season to score at least 20 points. In the first half, CBU jumped out to a 6-point lead to start the game and took its biggest lead of the half at 28-20. The Hawks answered with a 13-1 run to take a 33-29 halftime lead. The Lancers didn't take a lead from the 1:07 mark in the first half until the 8:39 mark in the second. Taylor even put the Lancers up 58-55 with 6:56 left, but SDCC answered with a 7-0 run to take a 62-58 lead with 5:23 to play. Kendra Morris, who scored 17, brought CBU within two, at 62-60, with a jumper that ignited a 12-0 run. Monique Calvello sank a free throw to pull the Lancers within one before Taylor put CBU up for good with a layup. Heather Couzens capped the run to a jumper to give the Lancers a 70-62 lead with 1:38 to play. Couzens scored 12 and pulled down five rebounds while Megan Bradford scored 13 and grabbed four boards. Calvello notched a season-high eight rebounds. The Lancers hit 47.5 percent (28-59) from the field, 56.7 percent (17-30) in the second half. CBU was also 5-for-9 from 3-point range with Morris draining three of her five attempts from beyond the arc. The Lancer defense also forced 25 turnovers. The Lancers scored 34 points off of turnovers and surrendered just seven of their 15 turnovers. The Lancers now prepare for the Golden State Athletic Conference home opener as No. 10 Azusa Pacific makes the trip to Van Dyne Gym, Saturday. |
