Cernin was an All-NWAACC first team selection after leading Clackamas to the NWAACC title.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University men’s basketball has added its second signee to the mix as head coach Tim Collins has announced the addition of David Cernin from Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Ore.

Cernin joins Riverside-Arlington High’s Davey Hopkins as the first 2 members of the Lancers’ 2007-08 recruiting class.

“I am excited to have David, because he makes basketball plays and makes people around him better,” said Collins. “Based on his numbers throughout his high school and junior college career, he is one of the best shooters in the Northwest right now. We now have 2 guys (along with Hopkins) coming in that we think are high-level players from winning programs that any coach would be proud to have in their program.”

This past season, Cernin, a 6-2 wing, averaged 15.5 points, 5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game in leading the 29-4 Cougars to their first Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) championship since 1994. Cernin was named All-NWAACC first team in addition to being named to the NWAACC Sophomore All-Star Team. The Cougars also won the NWAACC South Division with a perfect 14-0 mark.

In the Cougars’ 67-56 championship game victory over Bellevue, Cernin hit a trio of 3-pointers to key his way to 17 points, 5 assists and 3 steals. He had 10 points, 5 assists and 5 steals in the Cougars’ win over Walla Walla in the semifinals. Clackamas has made 7 straight NWAACC Tournament appearances, advancing to at least the quarterfinals in each of those appearances and earning third place finishes in 2002 and 2004.

Cernin ranked in the NWAACC Top 20 in 3-pointers made, rebounding, assists and steals.

California Baptist just finished one of its finest seasons, finishing 20-11, just its tenth 20-win season in the 51-year history of the program. The Lancers finished the season ranked No. 19 in the NAIA and earned an at-large berth to the 2007 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Tournament where they lost to No. 12 Union (Tenn.), 75-62, in the first round. It was the Lancers’ third trip and second in the past 3 years under Collins.
