RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University took advantage of 25 free passes and parlayed them into 25 runs to key a doubleheader sweep of Davenport (Mich.) on a soggy Saturday at Totman Stadium.
The Lancers used a six-run first inning to propel them to an 11-2 win in the opener and then used a 10-run outburst for a 14-3 win in the nightcap to complete the sweep, winning three of four from the Panthers. Both games today were seven-inning games. The sweep moves the Lancers to 7-2 overall, while the Panthers fall to 1-3. Cole Bullard had four hits and four RBIs. Eric Zaragoza and Jake Johnson each had three hits. Johnson finished with six RBIs, three in each game. In the 14 innings, the Lancers were issued 17 walks and were hit by eight pitches. They also had nine stolen bases. Todd Jones (1-1) went the distance in the opener, scattering five hits and striking out seven while giving up just one earned run to pick up his first win of the year. The Lancer offense backed him up with six runs in the first and five more in the third to blow the game open early. They only needed six hits to plate their 11 runs. Matt Johnson and Brian Sharp were both hit by a pitch before Jake Johnson hit a two-RBI double to center with one out. Zaragoza hit an RBI single, and Matt Marnati and Matt Johnson drew back-to-back bases loaded walks. Zaragoza scored the last run of the inning on a balk. In the third, Garrett Rau drew a leadoff walk, stole second and third and then scored on Zaragoza’s single through the left side. Marnati walked, and Matt Johnson and Sharp were both hit by pitches again. After Zach Hedges reached on a fielder’s choice, Jake Johnson had an RBI groundout followed by a Bullard RBI single to left to make it 11-0. Jones gave up consecutive two-out walks in the first but then retired seven straight before giving up a solo shot to Matt Collins to lead off the fourth. The Panthers loaded the bases with two outs, but Jones got Todd Laver to fly out to Bullard at second to end that threat. Jones gave up an unearned run in the seventh but got Jason Folske looking to end the game. Zaragoza was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Jake Johnson had three RBIs, and Bullard was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. In the nightcap, the Panthers took a 3-0 lead with a trio of runs in the second inning off Lancer starter Jesse Arreola (1-0). However, Sharp and Hedges hit back-to-back RBI doubles to key the Lancers’ four-run third inning that gave them a 4-3 lead. Sharif Othman, who earlier reached on a fielder’s choice, eventually scored the winning run on a double steal of home as Drew Madrigal stole second. Then, in the fifth, the Lancers put the game away, sending 16 batters to the plate in scoring 10 runs with just six hits. In that inning alone, the Lancers were walked five times. Marnati had two doubles, a two-run, two-bagger to center in his first at-bat and then an RBI double to right. Bullard had a two-RBI triple, and Jake Johnson had a two-RBI double as well. Arreola went four innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs while striking out two to pick up his first collegiate win. Cory Kiefer struck out all three outs in the fifth, and Mike Barro worked the final two scoreless innings. Marnati was 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Jake Johnson, Sharp and Bullard all had two hits apiece. |
