RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Mike MacNeill tied a season-high, ripping 14 kills to lead No. 1 California Baptist to a 3-1 (30-23, 32-30, 28-30, 30-23) win over NCAA Division III No. 10 Newbury (Mass.). The Lancers (16-5) also got a career-high 11 kills from Brandon Barna who hit a career-high .562 (11-2-16) as well. Levi Cabral also chipped in with 12 kills. Blair Penner and Tyler Krieger combined to dish out 57 of CBU’s 61 assists. Penner led the way with 30 while Krieger recorded a career-high 27. Christian Cannon also served a career-high two aces. “Brandon had a great match and put up some good numbers,” said CBU head coach Ryan McGuyre. “I was a little disappointed with our service game, but overall we had a pretty good side-out percentage. We started blocking in the final two sets and that made it a better match for us. Tyler is a smart player, but has been dealing with back injuries all year long so it’s been tough to get Blair rest if he needs it.” Stefan Brule posted a career-high 11 digs while Evan Frawley notched a career-high four blocks and ripped a career-high seven kills. Despite hitting just .278 (65-28-133) the Lancers still held Newbury to just a .153 (48-28-131) clip all while recording 12 team blocks, 46 digs and eight aces. The Lancers opened the first set with a 13-4 run that featured a trio of kills from Cannon. The Nighthawks cut it to 16-10, but CBU scored three straight on a pair of errors and another Cannon kill. Newbury got within five at 24-19, but Barna blasted back-to-back kills before Cannon posted his fifth kill of the set to put the Lancers up 27-19. After Newbury reduced the lead to 29-23, Cabral put it away with his sixth kill of the set. The second set featured 18 ties with the final one coming at 30-30. Neither team led by more than four at any point in the set. The Nighthawks held the four-point lead three times with the last at 16-12. CBU scored four straight to tie the set at 16-16 and no team led by more than two from that point on. Barna broke the 30-30 tie with a kill and then put CBU up 2-0 in the match with his 11th kill of the match. In the third set, CBU led 18-14, but watched Newbury use a 10-3 run to take a 24-21 lead. The Nighthawks took their largest lead of the set at 26-22, but a pair of MacNeill kills, in the midst of a 5-2 run, brought the Lancers within one at 28-27. Each team traded a point, including a kill by Mohamed Khattab, but a Lancer error handed the set over to Newbury. CBU broke open the final set with an 8-3 run to take a 17-13 lead after trailing 10-9. The Lancers didn’t trail form that point on. “This was an opportunity to get some other guys some playing time and show the coaching staff what they have,” said McGuyre. “This lets me know who I can start to work in especially with the three matches we have this week.” The Lancers will now hit a gauntlet of matches featuring NCAA Division I George Mason, Thursday and NAIA No. 7 St. Ambrose, Friday and Saturday. All three matches start at 7 p.m. inside Van Dyne Gym. |
