PRESCOTT, Ariz. — The desert heat can make a any person melt, but the five dual stretch that California Baptist University had might make the buzzards circle around any other wrestling program.

Just one night after the Lancers (7-4) took on two NCAA Division II opponents, CBU took on three ranked NAIA teams at the Mile High Duals. The Lancers knocked off No. 5, and 2009 NAIA National Dual champion, Southern Oregon, 24-15, and No. 20 Simon Fraser (B.C.), 35-10, but were dispelled by No. 3 Great Falls, 40-12.

Southern Oregon got on the board first with a win at 141-pounds, but the Lancers tied the dual at 3-3 as Ian Millan pulled out a 3-2 win over Jimmy Eggemeyer. Nikko Cataline gave the Lancers a huge boost with his 10th pin of the season when he stuck Justin Mills in 1:32. Preston Brown gave CBU a 12-3 lead with a 10-4 decision at 165.

The Raiders fired back with a decision at 174, but Lamar Reed answered with an 11-7 win over Levi Morgan to give CBU a 15-7 lead. The Raiders then took control of the dual with back-to-back wins at 197 and heavyweight to take a 16-15 lead.

It was all Lancers from there as the Sam Fragoza and Chauncey Philipps closed out the dual. Fragoza might have had the upset of the night knocking off No. 1-ranked Mitchell Lofstedt 10-8 to put the Lancers on top 18-15 before Philipps sealed the deal with a pin in overtime against Brian Jacobs. The Raiders were then penalized a point for misconduct on behalf of Jacobs to finalize the 9-point win.

CBU dug a quick and deep hole against Great Falls and never did climb out. After the Argonauts took 10-0 lead through the first two weights, the Lancers put points up with Cataline’s 11th pin of the year. Cataline picked up the fall on No. 5 Ross Mosher with just 30 seconds left in the bout to make it 10-6. That was the last points CBU scored until Philipps scored his second straight pin by sticking Kyle Middlemist in 2:32.

In the final dual of the night, CBU started down 3-0, but that was just one of three duals the Lancers lost compared to the seven it won against Simon Fraser. Millan tied the match up at 3-3 with a 9-8 decision over Alex Stemer at 149 before Cataline scored a pin over Max Arcand in 1:37. Brown then picked up a 4-1 decision and C.J. Knowland followed that up with a fall in 6:39 over Pat MacDonald to make it 18-3 in favor of the Lancers. The Clan stopped the run at 184, but CBU picked up a forfeit at 197 before SFU scored its last win of the night at heavyweight.

Fragoza and Philipps again shut the book on the night with as Fragoza stuck JJ Lum in 1:14 and Philipps tech falled Thomas Ostapowich.

CBU will now get set to travel to San Francisco Jan. 29-30 where it will take on Menlo and San Francisco State in a pair of duals Jan. 29 before wrestling in the California Collegiate Open, Jan. 30.
