RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- In its first-ever STUNT game, California Baptist University cheer narrowly fell to Sam Houston State, 15-14, in the Van Dyne Gym Saturday evening.

The Bearkats jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter before the Lancers won the final routine to get within 4-3. SHS led 8-5 at half and 12-8 after the third before the Lancers won the final quarter, winning the team performance to corral six points, but it wasn't enough to over the Bearkats' lead.

"This was a great opportunity to be a part of this competition, especially in its first year," said CBU Head Coach Tami Fleming. "The girls did an amazing job under a lot of pressure. I am proud of how they did."

In its inaugural season, STUNT is a new competitive team sport derived from cheerleading. It removes the crowd-leading element and focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer, including partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, jumps and tumbling as well as dynamic team performance.

Each game consists of four quarters where the routines in the first three quarters are set at the start of the season and learned by each team. The routines in the first and third quarters are done head-to-head at the same time. In the second and fourth quarters, teams perform alone on the floor to allow for use of the entire floor.

The first quarter consists of partner stunts, while the second quarter is group jumps and tumbling. The third quarter is pyramids and tosses, while the fourth quarter is the team performance. Each routine is judged by a panel of judges.

This was the Lancers' lone STUNT game of the season. They conclude their 2011 competition season at the National Cheerleading Association National Championships April 5-9 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
