RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University has five students athletes nominated in this week’s The Press-Enterprise Performer of the Week Poll.
Jesse Arreola, a sophomore left-hander from Riverside Patriot, tossed 8.1 shutout innings in the Lancers' 7-0 win over Vanguard last week. Arreola, who went into the starting rotation just three weeks ago, struck out four and allowed just four hits, carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning. He has allowed just four earned runs in his last 35.2 innings.
Nathalie Silva, a sophomore from Sao Paulo, Brazil, won the Unaffiliated Group NAIA Qualifying Tournament for the second year in a row. Silva led No. 3 CBU to its fourth tournament victory of the season. She shot 226 over 54 holes to beat the field of 34.
Emma Holden, a junior pitcher from San Carlos, Calif., allowed just two runs on four hits, in her first start of the week. She then threw a five-inning perfect game against Hope International Saturday, striking out nine in her second perfect game of the season (and 15 on the week) to move within four of tying Candice Thomas for the program’s career record with 601. Opposing hitters batted .111 against her.
Briana Corral, a senior second baseman from Moreno Valley Calvary Chapel, led the Lancers with a .600 batting average, going 9-for-15 on the week. She had two RBI and scored four runs with three doubles to help lead the team to a 4-0 record. Corral hit a big two-out double to set up Sloan McHann's walk-off homer against Biola early in the week.
Levi Cabral, a junior outside hitter from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, led the Lancers to their second-straight NAIA championship and eighth overall last week, earning tournament MVP honors in the process. Cabral led the tournament with 4.57 kills per game and had a tournament high nine service aces. The Lancers, ranked No. 1 all season, went 4-0 at the championship behind Cabral's leadership, as Cabral made a strong final case for NAIA Player of the Year. He posted a match-high 17 kills on a .464 hitting percentage in the championship match against host St. Ambrose.
