Just A Win Away

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- California Baptist University closed out a four game sweep of Academy of Art on the road Saturday, defeating the Urban Knights 6-1 and 4-2.

CBU has now won 16 straight conference games and is just a win away from clinching the PacWest title in its first season in the conference.

CBU moves to 42-6 overall, 25-4 PacWest with the two wins and will face Dominican in its final regular season contest on Monday. Art U falls to 20-27, 14-16.

The Lancers trailed for all of a half an inning in the opener before things got back to normal and CBU scored two in the top of the second and then four more in fourth.

CBU scored on a wild pitch and a single by Andie Banuelos in the second. Marshean August and Lindsay Henry hit back-to-back doubles as part of the four run fourth.

After giving up an RBI on a groundout in the first, Emma Holden settled in and did not allow a run the rest of the way to get the complete game win.

Holden threw seven innings, giving up five hits and striking out 10 to move to 21-4 on the season.

April Vazquez was 3 for 4 in the game and Sloan McHann went 2 for 4 at the plate. Five different players recorded RBI in the game for the Lancers.

Mara Rodriguez put the Lancers up 1-0 in the bottom of the first with a solo-home run, upping her league leading total to 12 on the season.

Kendall Gorham matched Rodriguez with her 12th homer in the third, followed by an RBI groundout from Kailey Willingham and RBI single from August to put CBU up 4-0.

Art U answered with runs in the fourth and fifth, but Tory Ferreira settled back in and followed one of her best outings of the season up with another complete game victory.

Ferreira threw seven innings, giving up six hits and two runs. She walked two and struck out two batters as well. Ferreira moves her record to 21-2 with the victory.

Rodriguez was 3 for 4 in the contest with an RBI and run scored, and Gorham, Vazquez and August all had two hits and one RBI in the game.

The Lancers recorded a total of 10 hits in the late game.
