COSTA MESA, Calif. --- California Baptist University squandered a 15-point lead against Vanguard Saturday night, losing 73-66.
It was the Lancers third straight loss as the team falls to 7-8 overall, 1-5 in the GSAC. Vanguard moves to 3-11, 1-5.
“Vanguard played really hard tonight and you could tell they wanted that first conference win,” said Head Coach Tim Collins. “We just couldn’t put them away and that’s frustrating.”
After taking a 12-point lead into the half, the Lancers built their largest lead of the night six minutes into the second half on a jumper by Kevin Deeb that put CBU up 48-33.
The Lancers were able to maintain their double digit lead, and with 8:51 to play had a 12-point cushion. From there it was all down hill.
Vanguard scored 13 straight points over the next 3:15, to pull ahead 59-58.The Lions got nine points from Chris Pynch. Pynch led all scorers on the night with 19 points, going 7-for-8 from the field and 3-for-4 from the 3-point line.
Pynch got some help from Christopher Raybon, who contributed seven points down the stretch, as the Lions continued their momentum to the end. Vanguard easily pulled ahead, going up by as much as nine points, for the victory.
“Even when we were winning I wasn’t too pleased with the way we were running our sets and that came back to bite us in the second half,” said Collins. “I’m not too sure what we can take from this game, but we just have to keep on working and move on.”
The Lancers stay on the road facing San Diego Christian Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Even with the loss CBU is just two games out of sixth place in the conference standings with 14 GSAC games to play.
