Smith To The Diamondbacks

RIVERSIDE --- Former California Baptist University standout Patrick Smith has signed a free-agent deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization.

Smith, the 2012 National Christian College Athletic Association World Series MVP, will report to the Missoula Osprey of the Pioneer League (Rookie-A). Missoula is the same club where former Lancer Taylor Siemens spent the 2011 season, winning the Pioneer League ERA title.

In two seasons at CBU, Smith went 16-2 with a 3.11 ERA in 36 appearances (133.1 innings). He spent 2011 as a reliever, going 6-0 with a 2.08 ERA and a team-best seven saves.

This past season, Smith was 10-2 with a 3.68 ERA as a starter. In 85.2 innings, he struck out 74 and tossed three complete games. At the NCCAA World Series, Smith with 2-0, allowing just eight hits and one run in 10 total innings. He won a pool play game, going seven innings with four strikeouts against Malone and then came out of the bullpen to toss three scoreless innings of relief in the championship win over Oklahoma Wesleyan.
