BEAUMONT, Calif. --- No. 1 California Baptist University closed out its third-straight tournament victory Tuesday, holding on to its first-round lead to win the Lady Braveheart Classic by eight strokes.
The Lancers shot 320 on the final day to hold off (NCAA Division II) No. 7 Western Washington for the win. CBU finished at 647 (327-320) for the tournament.
“It’s like I said yesterday, there are some very good teams at this tournament and we came out on top,” said Head Coach Lane Pace. “I’m proud of the way the girls played. They showed they are able to hold on to a lead.”
After leading the first day, Nathalie Silva finished in a tie for second at 161 (78-83). Sara Koizumi had the low round of the day for the Lancers, shooting a 78 to finish in a tie for ninth at 164. Samantha Katz shot 81 each day to finish fourth and Adriana Niclotti shot 163 (82-81) to finish in a tie for fifth. Kirsten Keyser finished with a 166 (86-80).
“Sara’s score could have been even lower if it wasn’t for a bad putting hole, so she played pretty well today,” said Pace. “Overall our scores still are not great, but they’re getting the job done. These past two courses are probably the two toughest we’ll see all year.”
Western Washington had the low score of the day Tuesday, finishing with a 319, but it was not enough to overcome the nine-stroke lead the Lancers built yesterday. No. 9 British Columbia also posted a 320 in the final round to finish at 659 in third place.
UC Riverside’s Amelia Ek posted a pair of 80’s to win the tournament by one stroke over Silva.
In all there were four ranked teams from either the NAIA or NCAA Division II at the tournament.
“We have to keep working and pushing towards our ultimate goal at the National Tournament,” said Pace. “We still have a some good tournaments with some tough fields coming up.”
The Lancers have a couple weeks off before they go for a fourth-straight win at their own CBU Spring Break Collegiate. CBU will finish out their regular season tournament schedule the following week at the Lady Otter Invitational.
