BEAUMONT, Calif. --- No. 1 California Baptist University opened the UC Riverside Braveheart Classic with a 327 to currently sit in first place.
The classic, played at Oak Valley Golf Club, features four ranked teams, including the Lancers.
“This is a good field and we’re winning by nine strokes, so I’m definitely pleased” said Head Coach Lane Pace. “We are improving each week, but still have some things to work on to get our scores where they need to be. Overall I’m happy with the way they’ve played.”
CBU holds a nine stroke lead over (NCAA Division II) No. 7 Western Washington (336), and a 12-stroke lead over both No. 9 British Columbia (339) and (NCAA Division II) No. 13 Western New Mexico (339).
CBU was led by Nathalie Silva who shot 78 to sit alone in first place individually. Samantha Katz shot 81 for the Lancers and Adriana Niclotti shot 82 to sit tied for fifth and seventh respectively. Sara Koizumi and Kirsten Keyser each shot 86 for CBU.
“We have already seen that a nine-stroke lead is not insurmountable,” said Pace, who’s team overcame a 10-stroke deficit to win at their last tournament. “This team knows how to play from ahead, though. I have confidence in them.”
Host UCR currently sits fifth in the team standings at 346 and Cal State Bakersfield rounds out the six-team field with a 359 in the opening round. CSUB’s Vanessa Boileau was the only other player to shoot in the 70’s on day one, posting a 79 to sit in second behind the Lancers’ Silva.
