RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- No. 15 California Baptist University started slow, but finished with a flurry to dispatch of Vanguard 14-4 in the first game of the NAIA Invite, held at the Lancer Aquatic Center.
CBU held just a 5-2 lead going into the half, before the Lancers exploded for five goals in the third quarter and four more in the fourth to get the relatively easy win over the Lions.
Vanguard scored both of its second half goals in the third quarter, getting shut out down the stretch by the brilliant play of CBU goalie Austen Ramer. Ramer recorded 14 saves in the contest.
CBU continues to improve its record-setting season, moving to 31-5. Vanguard falls to 10-16.
It was a balanced attack offensively for the Lancers, getting goals from eight different players. Aaron Steiger, Alan Ogden and Scott Gleason scored three a piece to lead the way.
Scott Buckalew tried to keep the Lions within striking distance early, scoring the team’s only two goals in the first half. Buckalew was unable to score in the second, however, with Israel Perez and Kyle Kim scoring in the third for Vanguard.
CBU was 2-for-5 in 6-on-5 opportunities and impressively held the Lions to 0-for-6 on man-up chances.
The season comes to a close Saturday with the final day of the NAIA Invite. CBU has two games on the schedule, opening play in the morning against Fresno Pacific at 9 a.m. and then closing the day against rival No. 20 Concordia at 3 p.m.
