SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- In their final meet before the PCSC Championships the California Baptist men’s and women’s swimming and diving team narrowly fell to NCAA div. II power UC San Diego.
The women won 10 of 16 events and held a nine-point lead heading into the final event of the day (400 free relay). However, UCSD’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams earned the top two spots to seal their 152-146 win.
The Lancers men won seven swims, but couldn’t overcome two costly disqualifications as they fell 163-137.
Vicente Andrade was DQ’d in the 200 back while the CBU ‘A’ team was whistled in the men’s 200-medley relay. In both events the Tritons placed first and second.
Mary Hanson was superb once again, posting three wins at the meet. The freshman set personal bests in the 100 back (56.48) and the 100 free (52.53), and won the 50 free (24.07).
Trevor Graifman lost for the first time all season with his third place finish in the men’s 3-meter board (268.80). Graifman, however, did keep his perfect season in the 1-meter alive, winning with a score of 313.20.
Jamie Flynn swept the women’s diving events, but by the narrowest of margins. After grabbing an easy win in the 1-meter board (249.15) Flynn just edged out UCSD’s Jamie Pearce 258.00 to 257.85. She was one of four Lancers to post multiple wins on the day.
Sophmores Sergio Molina and Hazel Castillo each nabbed two wins. Molina won the 100 and 200 breast (57.20 and 2:02.82 respectively) and finished second in the 400 IM (4:08.80). Castillo finished first in the 400 IM (4:4078) and the 100 fly (1:00.18).
NAIA reigning champion and record holder, Kevin Sellars, won the 400 IM 4:04.63, and finished second in the 1000 free (9:47.52).
CBU will have a break before competing in the PCSCs on Feb. 16 before heading to St. Peters, Missouri for the NAIA Championships on March 2.
