FRESNO, Calif. --- California Baptist University traveled to Fresno Saturday to compete in a tri meet with Concordia and Fresno Pacific, with both the men's and women's team beating the Eagles but falling to the Sunbirds.
Against Concordia, CBU men's team scored 174 points to the Eagles' 120. The women won with a team score of 202 to CUI's 94.
In a close meets with FPU, the men's team totaled 133 points to FPU's 155 while the women finished with a score of 140, just 16 points behind the Sunbirds.
In 32 total events, the Lancers were victorious in one third of the 12 individual events, three of the four diving competitions and one of the four relays.
For the women Hazel Castillo won both the 200 yard and 100 yard butterfly. In the 200, Castillo finished with a time of 2:09.61, followed by Adriana Quezada in second with 2:11.36 and Kyndal Terwilliger in third with 2:11.48 to complete the Lancer podium sweep. Castillo won the 100 with a time of 59.09, exactly nine tenths of a second ahead of the runner up from FPU.
In the 500 yard freestyle, Quezada and Terwilliger book ended another Lancer sweep with Hanna Braun filling in for second. Quezada recorded a 5:14.28 followed by Braun's time of 5:15.14 and Terwilliger's 5:15.62.
Quezada and Terwilliger also dominated the podium in the women's 1000 yard freestyle. Quezada won with a final time of 10:41.97, with Terwilliger finishing second at 10:45.80. Anna Megli finished sixth (10:46.76).
Two places behind Mary Hanson, Braun also finished third in the 200 yard freestyle. Hanson finished at 1:54.77, over three full seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Braun recorded a time of 1:58.38.
The CBU men's team finished the day by winning the 400 yard freestyle relay with the team of Patrick Cardillo, Tai Nuntapramote, Robert Nichols and Chris Toy, recording a final time of 3:09.63, less than four tenths of a second ahead of the team from Fresno Pacific.
Toy also won the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 47.42 seconds, just a half a second ahead of the runner up.
In the 100 yard breaststroke, the top three finishers finished within three tenths of a second of each other with Mathew Chong victorious with a time of 1:00.34. Jeff Babcock finished fourth (1:01.68) and Bryce Arata finished seventh (1:02.19).
Lancers bookended the podium for the 200 yard butterfly with Derek Wedel finishing first and Jeremy Hayes coming in third. Wedel recorded a time of 1:56.31 and Hayes clocked in at 2:02.75.
CBU was also successful on the dive boards, winning three of the four events. Joining the team after competing at Stanford on Friday, Trevor Graifman won both the 1M and 3M men's competitions. On the 1M board, Graifman final score totaled at 3:03.5, over 60 points ahead of the runner up. On 3M, he scored a 282.15.
Jamie Flynn led for the women, finishing third on the 1M and first on the 3M. On the 1M, she recorded a 216.15 and was followed by three other CBU divers. Miranda King finished fifth (199.65) and Chrissy Rynveld pulled double duty for CBU, finishing fifth (117.20) and seventh in the 100 yard butterfly. On the 3M, Flynn won with a total score of 228.70 and King finished fourth at 168.55.
The Lancers return home to face UC Davis next Saturday at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
