Steiger Nets 400th; Gorham, Holden Break Records - tie

Nov. 13, 2010 - Men’s Water Polo: Steiger nets 400

Aaron Steiger’s final collegiate game was bittersweet. The Lancers faced a Concordia team that they were 16-1 against all-time, but with a stagnant offense, the men were in jeopardy of losing their final match at the NAIA Invite. 

Trailing 3-5 with 2:44 left, Steiger stepped up and laced the ball past Concordia keeper Matrin Babovic. The goal was No. 400 in the Lancer’s career but the Eagles held on for the win. 

Nevertheless, Steiger became the program’s first ACWPC All-American after leading the nation in scoring (126 goals) for the second time in his career. 

Thanks to Steiger’s ability on both ends of the pool the team finished with a CBU high 32 wins and was ranked inside the CWPA Top-20 all season.

Steiger’s 400 scores nearly double that of his older brother, Ryan Steiger, the program’s No. 2 goal scorer (209). The senior, who led the nation in scoring twice, finished his remarkable career with the 110 multi-score games, 334 steals, and 42 games with a goal, assist, and steal; all CBU records.

Emma Holden and Kendall Gorham each pack a powerful punch, just in very different ways.

Gorham does it by knocking balls out of the park; Holden does it by sending batters back to the dugout.

On February 17 at the Ringer SoCal Smash Gorham did her best to live up to tournament name, blasting two homeruns to become CBU’s all-time homerun queen.  The first homer was a three-run shot to left field in a 9-1 win over Southern Oregon. 

The record-breaking bomb came with the Lancers leading 4-2 in the fourth inning against Davenport.  CBU ended up winning 8-2 and improved to 12-0 on the season.


“It felt really good to break the record,” said Gorham after the game.

“I did actually know how many I needed and that I was close coming into today. I tried not to think about it or let it affect me, but it was in the back of my head.”  

The second homer marked No. 38 in her career, good enough to top Ashley Boyd’s year-old record.
On April 19th the Lancers won their eighth straight GSAC Championship, but the real headline was Emma Holden. 

The junior punched out 10 batters to become the Lancers’ career strikeout leader and in the process broke the single season record for K’s (previously 247), fanning her 251st batter of the season. 

“It is really crazy to be mentioned along with CBU greats like them,” said Holden after the game.

“It feels so great to achieve this, but I wish I could share the record with Nicole Shoemaker and (Caty) Reeves who really strike out the batters because they know what pitch to throw. I just put the ball where they want it. I'm very thankful for the talent God has given me, but what I want more than records is a national championship.”

Holden would put up another 100 by year’s end for a total of 707 career strikeouts, but CBU fell in the final game of the NAIA Championships against Oregon Tech.
