SANTA CRUZ, Calif. --- Playing in its first road match in a month, No. 1 California Baptist University drilled (NCAA Division III) No. 6 UC Santa Cruz for a 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-13) victory.
The Lancers continued their hot play, extending their winning streak to nine matches as they head into a showdown with (NCAA Division I) No. 3 Stanford Saturday night.
“The guys are playing good efficient offense right now,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “I was pleased with what we did tonight both offensively and on the block.”
CBU out-hit the Banana Slugs .403-.145 on the way to the quick 3-0 victory.
“We did not want to give them any life after we got up 2-0, so I was glad we were able to finish it in three,” said McGuyre. “Especially with what happened up here last year and going into such a big matchup tomorrow. It was good to get such a solid win.”
The Lancers dropped a 3-2 match last season in Santa Cruz, after taking a 2-0 lead on the Slugs’ senior night.
Levi Cabral led the Lancers with 11 kills, while Aaron McCalmont posted eight kills and Ricky Brazee notched seven. Cabral hit .450 on the match.
CBU also out-blocked the Banana Slugs 7-2.
Sebastien Steigmeier put the exclamation point on the match, scoring the Lancers’ last three points from the service line. Steigmeier’s three aces ended CBU’s most dominating set of the night in the third.
“It was a strong effort from the service line tonight and that’s where everything starts,” said McGuyre. “The guys have been playing very well as of late and we need that to continue going up against Stanford.”
Saturday’s matchup with the Cardinal will be the Lancers’ third overall. In the past three years the two teams are 1-1 against each other. Stanford defeated CBU 3-0 last year after the Lancers handed the Cardinal a 3-0 defeat in 2009.
CBU is now 18-5 on the season, while UC Santa Cruz falls to 7-10.
