In the first match of the day, the Lancers defeated the Pfeifer Falcons in a three set match (25-22, 25-20, 25-16). CBU then had to go to five to defeat King in the late game (25-20, 24-26, 25-23, 15-9).
"The guys came together and played great all weekend," said Interim Head Coach Allan Vince. "There were a couple tough spots along the way, but the guys responded quickly every time. Every position was working together to play some great volleyball."
The Lancers as a team hit .360 with 47 kills on 89 attempts in the opener Saturday.
Kristopher Johnson led the charge hitting .525 with 13 kills on 19 attempts and managed three blocks. Garet Kreutziger pounded eight kills on just 12 attempts hitting .583.
The Lancers held the Falcons to a hitting percentage of .207 and not one Falcon recorded double digit kills.
Connor Metcalfe tallied 35 assists on the match.
The results were the same in the late game, but it wasn't as smooth sailing as King took the Lancers down to the wire.
"We really capitalized on the mistakes of the other teams we had played earlier in the tournament, but King didn't make those mistakes," said Vince. "They played a different style than we're used to and did it well. I was really proud of the way the guys adjusted and pulled it out in the end."
After splitting the first two sets, King took a third game that went into extra points to put the Lancers on the verge of losing their first match of the weekend.
CBU had a quick response ready, evening the match with a fourth game that also went back and forth the entire way before sealing the victory in the fifth.
Five straight points in the middle of the set, highlighted by a block and two kills from Daniel Freitas, helped CBU pull away and close out the win.
"Daniel was great for us this weekend," said Vince. "His game was really something we had been missing so far this season, but when he plays like this it makes it so we don't have any weak rotations."
Freitas was second in the team with 54 kills in CBU's four matches this week. Aaron McCalmont led the squad with 56.
McCalmont had 22 kills against King and Freitas had 21. Metcalfe posted 65 assists.
The Lancers will make their way back to the Van Dyne Gym on Wednesday, March 7 at 7 pm to take on Loyola Chicago.
CBU moves to 7-13 on the season.
