WATKINS ANNOUNCES RECRUITS

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University Head Cross Country Coach Wade Watkins has announced the Lancers’ 2010 incoming recruiting class.

The class includes six men and 13 women.

“With the addition of a few solid men, our men’s team should contend for its first GSAC title since 2001, and make their way to the NAIA National Championships,” said CBU Head Coach Wade Watkins. “On the women’s side we have 13 new recruits, which will give us depth and make it much easier to compete in this very competitive conference. The Lord continues to bless our program with amazing individuals who are dedicated to not only running fast, but representing CBU to the highest level. I’m excited to see the growth of our program. This Lancer team should surprise a lot of people out there.”

Men
Miguel Gonzalez (Los Altos HS)
Gonzalez helped Los Altos to an undefeated league title this past cross country season, running a personal best 16:30 at Mt. SAC. He also led Los Altos to an undefeated league title in track as a 2009 junior and was named track MVP as a 2010 senior. With a personal-best of 4:28 in the mile, Gonzalez was a CIF Division II qualifier in both cross country and track and field.

Jonathan Hernandez (Moreno Valley-Valley View HS)
Having only been running competitively the past two years, Hernandez has burst onto the scene. He helped Valley View High to consecutive league titles in 2008 and 2009 and finished in the top 10 in the league championships as a 2009 senior. Valley View also finished in the top 20 in the CIF Division I Preliminary meet. Hernandez ran track as a junior, running a 4:40 mile.

Mikey Lopez (Rialto HS)
Lopez led Rialto to the CIF Preliminaries as a 2008 junior and 2009 senior. He finished third in the league championship meet in 2008 and 10th in 2009. He ran a personal-best 15:29 at the Woodbridge Invite.

Josh Massey (Corona-Santiago HS)
A 2009 All-Riverside County first team selection, Massey ran a personal-best 4:23-mile and qualified for the CIF Division I Prelims for the fourth consecutive year. He eventually ran in the CIF Finals as a senior and was a two-time All-Big 8 League honoree. He also ran a 15:26 to qualify for the finals at Mt. SAC CIF Division I race. He has a personal-best of 15:26. In track, Massey set three school records and also had a hand in three other relay records.

Deshea Miller (San Bernardino Valley College/Carter HS)
Miller ran the 400, 800, 400 hurdles and was on the 4x400 relay team at San Bernardino Valley College. He ran a personal-best 48.79 in the 400 as a freshman to qualify for the state preliminaries. He also was part of the 4x400 relay team that ran a 3:13 and was ranked fourth in the Southern California. Miller has personal-bests of 1:58 in the 800 and 53.9 in the 400 hurdles. As a prep, Miller was third in the Citrus Belt League in the 200 and 400 as a junior. He qualified for the CIF Division I Preliminaries in the 400 as a senior and finished fifth in the 300 hurdles. The 4x400 relay team finished second at the CBL Championships.

Hunter Taylor (Winter Park HS, Florida)
A relatively new competitive runner, Taylor helped Winter Park High finish second at the Florida State Championships as a senior. He also helped the team garner the highest overall team GPA in the school all four years. In track, he was part of the 4x800 relay team that finished fifth in the state championships in 2010.

Women
Samantha Aguilar (Riverside Christian HS)
Aguilar led Riverside Christian to two CIF Southern Section Division V Championship meets in 2007 and 2009. She was also was a four-time CIF qualifier in the 4x400 relay.

Kayla Beaudoin (Corona-Centennial HS)
Beaudoin, who took a year off from running, set a course record at the Rubidoux Invite with a 3-mile time of 18:08.

Marisa Benson (Gresham Union HS, Oregon)
Benson earned All-Mountain Hood Conference honors and finished 52nd in the Oregon State Cross Country Championships.

Kim Carter (Arrowhead Christian HS)
Carter was a two-time qualifier for CIF Division V Finals, finishing in the top 10 her senior year. She was also a three-time All-Christian League selection and finished in the top three in the league championships on three separate occasions, including a league championship. She was a four-time all-league honoree in track, winning consecutive league titles in the two-mile as a sophomore and junior. Carter qualified for the CIF Preliminaries four times.

Ashlee Cervantes (Beaumont HS)
Cervantes earned All-Riverside County third team honors after finishing 11th at the CIF Division II Preliminaries. She was a three-time all-league selection and qualified for the State Championships as a 2008 junior. She was a three-time league champion in track and qualified for the CIF Division I Finals three times. Cervantes was also a four-time scholar athlete.

Brenda Perez (Riverside CC, Arlington HS)
Perez helped Riverside Community College to a fourth place finish at the 2009 state championships this past season, running a 19:14 and finishing in 27th place individually. She was also a two-time qualifier for the Southern California Championship Finals in track, running personal bests of 4:47 in the 1500 and 2:21 in the 800.

Jessica Reeder (Riverside CC, Corona HS)
Reeder was a two-time qualifier for the state championships at Riverside Community College in track, finishing fourth in the 400 hurdles in 2009, running a personal-best of 63:28. Was also a member of the Tigers’ 4x400 relay team that finished second in the state championships. Reeder prepped at Corona High, earning Mountain View League MVP honors in 2008 after winning a league title in the 300 hurdlers (47.3). She was also a member of the 4x400 relay and 4x100 relay that won back-to-back league titles in 2007 and 2008.

Megan Smedley (Riverside-Woodcrest Christian HS)
Smedley was the 2009 Big Sky League MVP after leading Woodcrest Christian to its third straight league title and its third straight top five finish at the state championships. WCHS finished second in 2007, third in 2008 and fourth in 2009 and also won the CIF Southern Section Division V Championship in 2007. Smedley was also a two-time CIF qualifier in the 400 meters in track and was named Citrus Belt Area Athlete of the Year in 2010 after leading Woodcrest Christian to the Big Sky title.

Reina Sotelo (Los Altos HS)
Sotelo was a 2009 All-San Gabriel Valley first team selection as a senior. A three-time team MVP, Sotelo qualified for the CIF Division II Preliminaries as a junior and a senior. In track, she led Sotelo to a Miramonte League championship as a senior. She was a three-time team captain and was voted Best Female Distance Runner and MVP as a junior and a senior.

Naomi Van Setten (Bloomington HS)
Van Setten led Bloomington to its first ever Sunkist League title in 2009. A three-time CIF Southern Section Division I qualifier, Van Setten was a two-time All-Sunkist League selection. She also won league titles in track in the 800, 1600 and high jump and qualified for the CIF Southern Section Championships in the 800 and 3200 in 2008 and the 1600, 3200 and high jump in 2010.

Alexandra Vukov (Riverside Poly HS/Woodcrest Christian HS)
Vukov led Woodcrest Christian High to a Big Sky League title and a second-place finish in the state championships in 2008. In track, she was also a CIF Southern Section qualifier in the 300 hurdles. Vukov transferred to Riverside Poly High her senior year and did not compete.

Amanda Newell (Bayfield HS, Colorado)

Rebecca Trupp (Riverside-Martin Luther King HS)


Last season, the Lancer men, who at one point were ranked No. 22 in the NAIA, finished the season just one spot and 20 points out of the top 25. They finished second in the GSAC Championships behind Westmont, and sophomore Javier Madrid qualified as an individual for the NAIA National Championships where he finished 174th out of 323 competitors. The Lancer women finished seventh at the GSAC Championships with Jacquie Lutz leading the way with a 20th place finish.
