BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --- California Baptist University opened its 2011-12 wresting campaign in impressive fashion getting six placers at the Roadrunner Open hosted by CSU Bakersfield Saturday. Two of the Lancers that placed were wrestling unattached.
The tournament had entries from NCAA Division I ranked teams Stanford (No. 14), Oregon State (No. 22) and Cal Poly SLO (No. 25) in addition to Arizona State and CSU Bakersfield. NCAA Division II No. 5-ranked Grand Canyon and No. 19 San Francisco State were also there.
The Lancers put six in the semifinals and four in the finals. Freshman Bradford Gerl was the lone champion, winning at 141. He trailed CSU Bakersfield's Erik Martinez 6-2 in the finals before rallying for a pin at 4:24.
"Putting four guys in the finals is pretty good for us," said first-year CBU Head Coach Lennie Zalesky. "There were some good teams here and the competition was good. We're still improving and trying to get better, but overall we did pretty well for an opener."
Dylan Cataline (149), C.J. Knowland (174) and Zach Merrill (285) all finished second. Merrill narrowly lost 4-3 to Jordan Johnson of Grand Canyon. Knowland wrestled unattached.
Chris Santana wrestled unattached and was third at 157, and Alex Anunciation was fourth at 133.
