PALO ALTO, Calif. --- Caleb Gerl (197) came up with a major decision in the final match of California Baptist University's dual meet with Stanford Friday, saving a draw for the Lancers against the NCAA Division I Cardinal.

After Stanford's Dan Scherer scored a technical fall against CBU's C.J. Knowland at 184 pounds, the Cardinal were in the driver's seat to secure the win with just one weight class remaining.

Gerl, needing a major decision or better, got just that with an 11-3 win over Alan Yen at 197 pounds to save the 17-17 draw.

Each team won five matches in the meet, with CBU getting two majors and three decisions and Stanford scoring four decisions and a tech. fall.

The Lancers' Landon Saldana also recorded a major decision at 133 pounds over Austin Quarles. Those were CBU's first points of the meet.

Stanford opened the meet winning the first two weight classes, before Saldana's major and a decision for Ethan Hall (141) grabbed the lead for CBU.

The two teams split the next four decisions leading up to the heroics for both sides in the final two weight classes.

Friday's dual meet was the second straight thriller between these two programs. Last season's meet saw CBU come back from a 14-3 deficit and win on the final match.

It is the first dual meet draw of the season for the Lancers, who move to 10-9-1. Stanford is now 7-9-1.
