RIVERSIDE, Calif. – There are just two differences from one year to the next for California Baptist University in 2014-15. The changes will hopefully serve as a playoff warm-up for the Lancers, as one of their regular-season tournaments also plays host for the NCAA Division II Championships.
The Lancers finished in the top-10 in eight of their 10 tournaments last year, while finishing top-five three times. After graduating four athletes from last year, CBU will look to build on its success and take the next step in its second year under head coach John Hackney and as a fully-fledged NCAA Division II member.
The Rock Barn Collegiate Invitational and St. Edward's Invitational stand as CBU’s additions, replacing the Mission Cup and Pioneer Shootout from 2013-14 this upcoming season.
With the Mission Cup out of this year's schedule, CBU goes straight into tournament play with three repeat events from last year -- the WNMU Fall Intercollegiate, Guy Harvey Invitational and Otter Invitational. The Lancers open the year at Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate at the Golf Club of Estrella on Sept. 29-30.
The busiest month of the year for CBU begins early in October, as the Lancers play a season-high three times that month. It begins with the Guy Harvey Invitational (Oct. 6-7) and Otter Invitational (Oct. 20-21), continuing with Lenoir-Rhyne's Rock Barn Collegiate Invitational (Oct. 27-28).
Lenoir-Rhyne will also serve as the host of the NCAA Division II Championships, with both of its tournaments being played at the Rock Barn Golf and Spa. The Guy Harvey Invitational, hosted by Nova Southeastern, will be played alongside the Lancers women's golf team at the PGA National Golf Club.
The Lancers return to Cal State Fullerton's Folino Invitational and Cal State San Bernardino's Coyote Classic in February. The Folino Invitational is scheduled for Feb. 16-17 at the Industry Hills Golf Club, while the Coyote Classic will be played at the Arrowhead Country Club.
In March, CBU plays its second new tournament in the St. Edward's Invitational at the Grey Rock Golf Club on March 9-10. The Lancers return home to host the CBU Invitational on March 23-24 at the Eagle Glen Golf Club in Corona.
The Lancers head back to Western New Mexico for the Mustang Intercollegiate at the Palm Valley Golf Club on April 6-7 before the PacWest Championships. Dixie State will hold the conference championships April 20-22 at the Sunbrook Golf Club.
For the second year in a row, CBU will aim at qualifying for the NCAA Division II West Regionals. Cal State East Bay is hosting the tournament this year at the Hiddenbrooke Golf Club on May 4-6. The Lancers will then aim at advancing to the NCAA Division II Championships for the first time, with the national tournament taking place May 18-22.
