RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- A new season awaits the California Baptist University softball team after it fell shy of lofty expectations of winning consecutive PacWest Conference and NCCAA National Championships in 2013.
Third-year Lancers head coach Bill Baber will look for his team to push its streak of 30-win seasons to 13 and improve on its record from last year -- 31-18, 18-14 in conference. CBU opens the season Feb. 1 with a home doubleheader against Saint Martin’s beginning at noon.
CBU is scheduled for 54 regular-season games, including 32 PacWest and 22 home games this year. The Lancers non-conference opponents are made up of UC San Diego, Cal State San Bernardino, San Francisco State, Humboldt State and La Sierra. They will also play in the Desert Stinger Tournament (Feb. 7-8) and Tournament of Champions (April 4-5).
After the Desert Stringer Tournament, CBU will begin PacWest play with a doubleheader against reigning conference champion Hawaii-Hilo on Feb. 11, starting at 5 p.m. The Lancers took seventh in the PacWesr conference last year and were bounced in the first round of the NCCAA West Regional Tournament by Simpson in a nine-inning affair, 3-2.
The Lancers brave a 12-game road trip in the middle of their conference schedule. They’ll open the trip at Dixie State March 8 and close it out March 22 at Dominican, playing San Francisco State Humboldt State and Notre Dame de Namur in between.
In its first season eligible for championship play, CBU will look to begin a run in the postseason on May 8 with the NCAA West Regional Tournament. The NCAA Super Regionals and National Championship tournaments are set for May 16-17 and May 22-26.
