The icing on the cake of the Lancers' championship celebration was that the clinching win came against the lone team to hand CBU a loss this season in conference play.
CBU used two late goals to seal a 3-2 overtime victory over Point Loma and win the team's second straight PacWest title.
"We are so proud of the girls for the way they've worked hard all year to earn the right to represent the PacWest as Champions once again," said CBU Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We really had to fight through some adversity today early on, but to our players' credit they got back out there, fought hard and earned the result we wanted."
And fight hard late the Lancers did, scoring the equalizing goal with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime.
As time began to run out CBU began firing away, peppering the Sea Lions with 10 shots in the last 17 minutes.
An 80th minute cross into the box was headed down in front of the goal by Kelly Jenks and Bernadette Witz came in to nail home her 12th score of the season. The Lancers weren't done yet, firing three more shots in regulation before the game was sent to overtime.
Overtime was Chantel Cappuccilli's time to shine. With just over a minute to go in the first extra period, Cappuccilli sent a ball sailing toward the goal from deep outside the box, finding the upper right corner to ignite a celebration on the field for the Lancers.
It was the senior captain's first goal of the year.
"I wasn't sure it was going in when I hit it, but as I saw it start to curve at the end I realized it had a chance," said Cappuccilli. "That was the best feeling ever. Being able to win the title here on our home field is a great way to go out. We had to dig deep to get this win, but we got it done and it feels amazing."
CBU benefitted from an own goal on a hard cross by Witz to strike first in the opening half, but the Sea Lions evened the contest on a goal by Kelly Christerson four minutes later.
Fourteen minutes into the second half was when Point Loma would pull ahead, getting a header score off a set piece from mid-field by Tara Kracy. Goalkeeper Tiffany Kracy recorded the assist with the half-field boot into the box.
From there CBU turned it up a notch, finding a gear the Sea Lions didn't have. The Lancers held possession for nearly all of the last 20 minutes of regulation and much of the overtime.
"We knew this was a game that was going to come down to who wanted it more and the girls really wanted it at the end," said St. Clair. "This is where the girls' work ethic, training and fitness really paid off against a good Point Loma team."
The win moves CBU to 13-2-1 overall, 12-1 (36 points) PacWest. The Lancers have not lost in nearly a month since traveling to Point Loma, rattling off nine straight wins in the process. CBU clinches with one game still remaining in the conference season, holding the head-to-head tiebreaker with Azusa Pacific, the only team that could catch CBU in the PacWest points standings.
Point Loma falls to 11-4-1, 8-3-1 (25 points).
CBU wraps the regular season up with a trip to Grand Canyon this Saturday.
