RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- It was another clean sweep Wednesday night at John C. Funk Stadium for the top ranked and undefeated California Baptist University Lancers who defeated Tennessee Wesleyan 8-0 and 6-0.
Game one of the doubleheader was highlighted by two stellar individual performances from Melanie Ahumada in the circle and Nina Cabrales at the plate. Ahumada had complete command of her pitches as she tossed a no-hitter in her fifth start of the year. It was Ahumada’s fourth complete game and second shutout this season. She was one walk away from a perfect game. Cabrales did more than her fair share at the plate by driving in half of the Lancers’ eight runs. She highlighted the game with a three-run shot to center field in the second inning and followed in the third with an RBI single to center. Briana Corral also had two RBIs and went 3-for-3 in the game. Corral raised her season average nearly 30 points to a gaudy .462. An overmatched Kayla Kerns took the loss for the Bulldogs lasting three innings and giving up four earned runs on six hits. The TWC defense had four errors behind Kerns. There was another pitching gem in the nightcap, this one by Kendall Gorham in her second start of the year. Gorham threw a complete game shutout going a full seven innings, striking out five and allowing three hits and no walks. Gorham’s first start of the year was also a complete game shutout. Like the first game, the nightcap was a total effort for the Lancers, and the long balls stole the show. CBU blasted three home runs in the game, one in the second inning and two in the third. Mara Rodriguez led off the parade with a solo shot to center in the second. It was Rodriguez’s third home run of the year. In the very next inning, Brianna Corral took an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall for a two-run shot and two batters later Sloan McHann sent a moon shot over the right field wall driving in two more. For Corral it was her second home run in as many nights. The only other RBI of the game belonged to Jordan Flora, who doubled in a run in the first. CBU improved to 27-0 overall, while TWC falls to 1-11 on the year. |
