Moments of the Year: Honorable Mention
It's a good problem for an athletics program to have--so many
great moments in one season that it's very difficult to whittle the list down to just 10. And
while the original list had nearly 30 distinct moments that made up arguably CBU's
best season in program history, there just wasn't enough room for all of them
to make the final cut. So today, we present the first seven out, all of which
are spectacular in their own right and worthy enough to receive a special
honorable mention.
Let the debate begin.
Note: these are
presented in chronological order
Nov. 3, 2010 - Men's Soccer Picks Up First-Ever Postseason Win
Playing in its third straight postseason for the first time
in CBU men's soccer history, the Lancers picked up their first-ever postseason
victory, defeating Westmont 1-0 in the opening round of the GSAC Tournament to
move to the semifinals for the first time ever. With the game
seemingly destined for overtime, freshman Heitor Santarem scored on a penalty kick
in the 84th minute to give the Lancers the win. Fellow freshman Joey
Pacheco helped secure the win with two big saves late in the game.
Nov. 5, 2010 - Women's Soccer Beats The Master's In Penalty Kicks In GSAC Semis
After getting thumped by The Master's, 5-1, a month earlier,
the Lancers got their revenge with a nail-biter on the road in the semifinals
of the GSAC Tournament, defeating the Mustangs on penalty kicks to move to the
GSAC Tournament championship game. After the teams played to a 1-1 tie
following two overtime periods, the squads were knotted at 3-3 in the shootout heading
to the fifth round of penalty kicks. Freshman keeper Katie Rumfola made a
clutch save, and three-time All-GSAC Jacquelyn Witz scored the game winner to
move CBU to the finals.
Jan. 4, 2011 - Wrestling Ties Stanford With Major Decision In Final Match
Facing what looked like certain defeat at NCAA Division I
Stanford in the final week of the regular season, the Lancers, who were
trailing 17-13, needed a major decision in the final match of their dual meet to
avoid the loss. Closing the meet at 197 pounds, Caleb Gerl played the hero,
defeating Stanford's Alan Yen 11-3 to salvage a tie for CBU.
Jan. 5, 2011 - Men's Volleyball Beats No. 2 UC Irvine In Season Opener
CBU opened its 2011 campaign in epic fashion, taking a
five-set thriller at home from NCAA Division I preseason No. 2 UC Irvine. With
each team holding title expectations in their respective divisions, the Lancers
put on a show in front of an electric home crowd, coming back from a 2-1
deficit to defeat the highly touted Anteaters. The win snapped a five-year
string of season-opening losses to UCI.
April 9, 2011 - Women's Water Polo Beats UCSB In Thrilling and Bizarre Fashion
Though it shows a 5-0 forfeit on the schedule, CBU's victory
over No. 15 UC Santa Barbara was as much a thriller as it was bizarre. With the
game tied 9-9 with 29 seconds left, the Lancers were awarded a 5-meter penalty
shot when a heated argument on the deck ended things. The UCSB coach was
ejected from the game, giving CBU the forfeit victory and its first-ever win
over the Gauchos.
April 8, 2011 - Cheerleading Has Best Finish Ever at NCA Nationals
The Lancers made a record run at the NCA College Nationals
in Daytona Beach, Fla., scoring the program's highest finish ever. CBU finished
fifth at the championships with a score of 8.575, which came after the Lancers
automatically qualified for the finals for the first time ever.
May 6, 2011 - Softball Wins GSAC Tournament With Furious Seventh-Inning Rally
CBU won its third-straight GSAC Tournament Championship with
a thrilling comeback win against Azusa Pacific. After CBU defeated the Cougars,
7-0, to open the best-of-three championship series, it looked to be headed for
a third game with Azusa Pacific holding a 3-0 lead heading into the seventh
inning. The Lancers scored on an RBI single by Mara Rodriguez and then tied it
on a two-run double by Kendall Gorham to force extra innings. CBU eventually won
the game in the tenth, scoring the go-ahead run on a squeeze bunt by April
Vasquez.
So there it is. Seven of the best moments from this season worth mentioning. It can only get better from here, right?
The countdown to No. 1 begins Wednesday with Moment No. 10. What will it be? Here's a hint. It involves several school records.
