RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Looking to create a safe distance behind them in the PacWest standings, the No. 8-ranked California Baptist University Lancers stayed very much in front with a 91-84 win over Chaminade Thursday night.
The PacWest's top-seeded Lancers improve to 21-1 overall, 15-1 in conference with the result, while the Silverswords drop to 13-10 on the season and 10-5 in the PacWest.
Anthony Cosentino led both teams in scoring, ending the night with a career-best 31 points. The senior forward went 9-for-13 from the field and 9-for-12 from beyond the arc, needing just one more to tie the record set in 1989 by Tim Skellenger. Ryan Berg followed with 17 points (5-for-18) and Ivan Patterson ended the night with 11 points (5-for-11).
From the beginning, CBU looked to set the tone as it opened the contest with an 11-0 run. Cosentino started the scoring spree with a three-pointer and was joined in the run by Michael Smith, Eric Nelson and Chris Brown.
The Silverswords found their rhythm, however, and battled back into the game with a 9-0 run to take their first lead at 29-28. Cosentino would have none of that, though, sinking a shot from beyond the arc to put his squad back in front at 31-29.
Chaminade hung with CBU for the remainder of the half, but couldn’t take control of the upper hand in the first, heading to the locker room with a score of 46-42, in favor of the Lancers.
Out of the break, CBU looked determined to maintain control of the game and attacked first. Berg bucketed the first two points of the half, but this time the Silverswords didn’t want to surrender a massive run.
Keeping it tight, Chaminade kept within single-digits of the Lancers and even took over the lead, but never for long. In front 61-60, Cosentino hit his seventh shot from distance to once again put his team in front with just over 10 minutes left on the clock.
Patterson sparked the Lancer offense by sinking a three, followed by a stolen ball, to put CBU ahead 74-71 heading down the stretch.
As time ran off the clock, CBU started to break free from Chaminade, as Cosentino continued to sink three-pointers. The Silverswords attempted to foul back in, but the Lancers finished their chances at the charity stripe to claim the win.
CBU only has two more regular-season contests guaranteed at home, with the first one being broadcast on live television. Saturday’s game against Hawaii-Hilo will tip off at 7:30 p.m. on Fox Sports West. Monday’s matchup with Hawaii Pacific, also scheduled for 7:30 p.m., will feature six seniors: Kyle Wong, Cosentino, Garrett Jefferson, Geoff McIntosh, Patterson and Kevin Crabb.
