RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University broke through its winless drought with a commanding 78-65 victory over Dominican University of California Wednesday night.
With the win, the Lancers improve to 3-7 on the season and pick up their first PacWest victory to hold a 1-3 conference record. The Penguins continue on their winless streak, however, falling to 0-10 overall and 0-4 in the PacWest.
"It was a real team effort tonight," said head coach Jarrod Olson. "I'm really proud of the way the girls played."
Four CBU hoopsters finished the night with double figures, led by Kamille Diaz with 14 points--5-for-10 from the field, 4-for-8 from beyond the arc. Jasmine Sauser followed not far behind with 13 points (5-for-9), while Elise Shelton (4-for-10) and Cassidy Mihalko (3-for-7) each added 11 to the Lancers’ total. Shelton was just on the brink of a double-double, ending the night with nine rebounds.
"Elise and Kamille played well inside-out and Jasmine and Cassidy really contributed in transition," said Olson. "It was nice to see everyone make a contribution."
Neither team could really find its rhythm in the opening minutes, tied 4-4 in the first four minutes.
Looking to find the winning ticket, CBU relied on quick substitutions to create an offensive spark and found it in Ashley Jones, who finished a pair of threes to give CBU a six-point lead at 12-6 and 13:14 left in the half.
After Dominican cut the lead to four, the Lancers went on a 9-1 run to hold their largest lead of the half at 21-9 and just over seven minutes remaining in the first frame.
The Penguins battled back, however, tying the score at 28 and then scoring the next two points to change the lead for the third time of the night. CBU responded by closing out the half with a 7-3 run to hold a 35-33 advantage at the break.
CBU opened up its lead in the second half, taking a 15-point advantage at 65-50, capped by a layup in the paint from Sauser at 7:55.
Trying to battle back into the game once more, Dominican cut the Lancers’ lead into single digits, but scores from Jones, Sauser and Megan Brown put CBU back in front by double-digits at 74-58 and 3:38 left in the game.
Defensively, the Lancers forced the Penguins to take tough shots and kept the second-chance shots to a minimum as they kept Dominican off the boards.
With just over two minutes on the clock, and CBU in front by 15 points, the Penguins completed two shots at the charity stripe and turned on the full-court pressure.
The Lancers finished out the last minute of action by passing and moving the ball, holding on to the victory at 78-65.
CBU will look to keep on its winning ways as it takes on Academy of Art on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lancers opened PacWest play with a 74-66 defeat on the road at the Urban Knights’ home court.
