AZUSA, Calif. --- California Baptist University has known the ups and downs of overtime far too well. Once again, however, the Lancers were on the down side of a golden-goal result, dropping a 1-0 loss to Azusa Pacific.
In a rematch of an earlier non-conference matchup where the Cougars also grabbed a one-goal victory, the Lancers (8-5-1, 8-3 in conference) outshot their opponent 20-7 but could not find the back of the net.
Alex Anderson opened the game with one of his five shots on the day, just getting under the ball to send it over the crossbar in the sixth minute of action. The Lancers continued to press, but held a 0-0 draw with the Cougars at halftime.
Coming out of the break, Anderson fired off a shot in the first 30 seconds, but a Cougar defender got in the way to block the shot.
As the clock wound down in regulation, each team created chances but the defenses held strong. With just over 15 minutes left to play, Anderson had another shot blocked, allowing Marc Hope to get a crack at the ball, but it ultimately sailed over the crossbar.
With five minutes left, Joey Pacheco made a save to keep the Cougars out of his net and initiated a counter attack with a quick throw. As the Lancers drove down the field, Ike Akubuilo's shot was blocked to give CBU a corner kick. Chris Gaitan sent the ball into the box, connecting with Cole Schmit's head, but the header went just wide of the net.
Looking to end the overtime quickly, Schmit fired off a shot first, forcing the APU goalkeeper to make a save.
Minutes later, however, it was the Cougars who'd find the back of the net. Oktay Bulut sent a shot from distance sailing into the far side netting to seal the win for APU. The Cougars now stand 13-4 overall, 9-2 in the PacWest.
CBU returns home to finish the regular season with a pair of games. The Lancers first take on non-conference opponent Seattle Pacific on Wednesday at 3 p.m., followed by a conference matchup against Dixie State on Saturday, also at 3 p.m.
