RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Jumping right into its first year of NCAA postseason eligibility, the California Baptist University's women's soccer team became the first Lancer program to earn a berth in the NCAA Division II National Championship tournament.
“We are thrilled to qualify for the 2013 NCAA tournament," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "That being said, our focus remains on preparing for the three challenging games remaining in our regular season schedule and competing for the PacWest Conference Championship. “
First things first, the Lancers still have three games left in the regular season and St. Clair and her squad have their eyes set solely on their next opponent: Azusa Pacific.
The Lancers and Cougars face off on Saturday in Azusa at 1 p.m., a showdown between the PacWest's top two teams. CBU currently sits in first place with a 9-1 conference record (27 points), while APU is just two points behind the Lancers with a 8-0-1 PacWest record.
APU is still in transition into becoming a Division II program, and therefore ineligible for postseason, but can still challenge for the PacWest title. The Cougars have to face Fresno Pacific on the road Wednesday night before they host the Lancers.
CBU finishes out the regular season at home with a pair of games against Dixie State before starting the NCAA West Region bracket play in mid-November.
