RIVERSIDE --- California Baptist University did more than just hang with a mostly NCAA Division I field at the UC Riverside Birdies for Breast Cancer Invite Monday.
The Lancers sit second in the standings after 36 holes of play, shooting a 591 (290-301) to finish ahead of the likes of Cal State Northridge, Georgetown and Western Kentucky. CBU currently has two players in the Top 10 individually as well and matched a school record with an opening round 290.
“The girls played phenomenal today,” said CBU Head Coach John Hackney. “We got some great individual play out of Marvi to lead us and then as a team we played some excellent, consistent golf.”
Marvi Monsalve (139) led the Lancer charge firing an opening round 68 followed by a one-under 71 to sit in a tie for second. Tina Yang (148) opened with a 71 and then notched a 77 to sit in a tie for ninth.
Monsalve was one of four players to shoot a tournament-best 68 on the day, setting a single-round school record in the process. UCR’s Brittani Ferraro leads the field with a 138 (70-68), sitting just a stroke ahead of Monsalve and one other.
UCR currently leads the field after posting a 582 (290-292) and CSUN is third with a 593. The Matadors opened the day in the lead with the day’s low round of 285, but followed that with a 308 to fall behind the Lancers.
