POMONA/LA VERNE, Calif. --- While California Baptist University wasn't able to keep its streak alive Saturday, falling 17-4 to No. 7 Long Beach State, but the Lancers rebounded to beat Occidental 17-8 later in the day.
In the opener, Long Beach State capitalized on several multiple-goal runs, starting the game with a 4-0 lead. Spencer Shore scored to cut the streak and Matt Puig added another from five meters to put the game within two.
That would be the closest the Lancers would keep with the 49ers, however, as Long Beach State scored another four goals before Eric Carnohan could answer in the third to put the score at 8-3.
Clint Walling gave the Lancers their last goal of the game from five meters, but the 49ers finished the match out with their final 4-0 run to win 17-4.
Looking to shake off the loss, CBU opened the nightcap by scoring two goals in the first minute and a half of action. Despite the early start, the Lancers would only lead by one at the end of the first quarter, with a score of 4-3.
The Lancers opened up the lead to 9-5 in the second quarter off goals from Carnohan, David Rodriguez, David Ring, Keith Jizmejian and Walling. Walling's goal initiated a five-goal run as CBU took a 13-5 lead in the third before Occidental could find the back of the net.
With a 13-6 lead, the Lancers finished the game with a 4-2 fourth quarter, capped by Ryan Penney's goal in the last 10 seconds--his first of the season--to seal the 17-8 victory.
CBU was paced by Jizmejian's four goals and Cody Wetherbee's three assists. Defensively, Joseph Moorman made nine saves (adding to his 11 saves in the opening game) and Rodriguez grabbed five steals.
