RIVERSIDE --- In a battle of the last unbeaten teams in the PacWest, California Baptist University fell just short against Point Loma Saturday night.
The Lancers made a late push, but couldn’t complete the comeback, falling 3-1 (25-16, 25-15, 20-25, 25-22) to the Sea Lions.
The loss drops CBU’s record to 9-6 overall, 6-1 in the PacWest and moves PLNU to 13-3, 7-0 in conference.
The Lancers couldn’t find the run they needed in the opening two games, falling behind early in both. CBU trailed 12-5 in the opener and 13-6 in game two. The Lancers were outhit .333-.085 through the first two games.
The Lancers would go up 12-6 before PLNU scored four unanswered points to climb back in the game. An unforced error followed by a right-handed smash from Kim McCalmont ended the run. After trading points, CBU got back-to-back blocks by Malika O'Brien to regain control of the set as PLNU hit -.049 in the third game.
The momentum would carry into the fourth game as CBU built a 10-6 lead early on, but the Sea Lions again came back, taking a 17-15 lead to force a Lancer timeout. A 3-1 run out of the break gave PLNU a 20-16 lead the Lancers couldn’t come back from.
CBU out-blocked the Sea Lions 15-8 on the night, posting 10 total stuffs in the last two games, but PLNU owned a .209-.141 hitting advantage.
The Sea Lions’ Heather Leavitt led all players with 17 kills.
Lauren Marr led the Lancers with 10 kills and McCalmont had nine. O’Brien led all players with eight total blocks and Dragovic posted seven.
