GOODYEAR, Ariz. --- California Baptist University posted a 297 on the final day of the Western New Mexico Intercollegiate to finish seventh in the 19 team field.
The Lancers shot a 10-over 874 (285-292-297) for the tournament, finishing just two strokes outside of the top 5.
“We started out really well, we just didn’t finish the day strong,” said CBU Head Coach John Hackney. “Still, we were just a couple of shots away from a pretty good finish in a strong field. I said coming in that a top 5 at this tournament would be good and we were right there.”
Stephen Watson was able to secure a top 5 finish individually for the Lancers, shooting a three-under 213 (70-70-73). Colorado Mesa’s Colin Prater took the individual title with a 209.
“Fredrik got back on track with a 74 in the final round, but overall we just didn't make enough birdies today,” said Hackney. “It’s a good start for our first tournament of the year, we just have to improve on how we finish. We definitely know we can be right there in every tournament we play in.”
Oklahoma Christian completed the wire-to-wire victory with a final day 284 to shoot 13-under as a team. Western New Mexico and Colorado Christian rounded out the top 3.
