COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- California Baptist University’s lucky number was 11 on Saturday as the Lancers split 22 total goals evenly between a pair of wins at the Air Force Tournament.
CBU avenged an earlier season loss to Pomona Pitzer with an 11-4 victory in the early game and then took down Mercyhurst 11-9 in the afternoon.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first quarter to Pomona Pitzer, CBU turned in a dominant performance in the second period, scoring five straight goals to take a commanding 5-1 lead into the half. Five different players got on the board in the second quarter, starting with Keith Jizmejian’s first of three goals in the game.
It would be 6-1 before the Sagehens scored again. CBU held its five goal lead going into the fourth, giving up just one score in the final period.
Eric Carnohan and Jake Jizmejian each had a pair of goals for the Lancers in the opener. Joey Moorman was the star of the game in goal, posting 15 saves en route to holding the Sagehens to just four goals.
In the late game CBU built a 4-1 first quarter lead and then had to hold on late as Mercyhurst made a fourth quarter push.
With 4:43 to play the Lakers drew to within one, at 9-8, on a goal by Isaac Oglobin, forcing a CBU timeout.
Out of the break the Lancers got a quick strike from Cameron Custance to go back up by two.
Another Mercyhurst goal kept it close, but CBU’s response with 1:30 to play was the final goal of the night.
The pair of wins moves the Lancers to 5-6 on the season.
