RIVERSIDE --- California Baptist University Head Men’s Water Polo Coach Rick Rowland has released the Lancers’ 2013 schedule as CBU opens its first year of play in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA).
The Lancers’ slate features eight conference games for the first time in program history, and has 11 total home contests and six regular season invites for the year.
“We’ve been waiting 13 years to be able to join a conference and have something to play for at the end of the year like this,” said Rowland, the only head coach CBU Men’s Water Polo has known. “We are extremely excited for this season and for the new challenges of playing in the WWPA. Having the conference tournament and a chance at an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament is going to be great for this program and for the guys to look forward to this year.”
The WWPA tournament will be held Nov. 22-24 at UC Davis, with the winner earning a spot at the NCAA Championships Dec. 7-8.
The Lancers open the 2013 campaign Sept. 7 at UC San Diego’s Triton Tournament. CBU continues its early season tournament schedule at the Inland Empire Tournament in Redlands, Calif. the following weekend (Sept. 14), before hosting the Lancer Invite Sept. 20-21.
CBU’s first ever conference game will be played at the Lancer Invite on Sept. 21, when the team hosts Pomona-Pitzer. WWPA contests are often played in conjunction with regular season invites to accommodate teams’ travel schedules. The Lancers’ first home WWPA game will be Friday, Oct. 11 when they host UC San Diego at 3 p.m.
“Being a member of a conference like the WWPA definitely makes our schedule a lot stronger and gives our ranking more credibility,” said Rowland. “Before we were really playing for that ranking and to see how high we could get, but now it means more as we head into the postseason. We have some exciting challenges ahead of us.”
The Lancers also have key matchups on the road at Air Force (Sept. 27) and Loyola Marymount (Nov. 9), as well as hosting Redlands late (Nov. 2).
CBU closes the regular season Nov. 16 when they host Fresno Pacific and Concordia before opening postseason play the following week.
