RIVERSIDE --- Four straight conference titles, two straight NCCAA World Series titles and yet another 40-win season has landed California Baptist University Head Baseball Coach Gary Adcock another honor.
Adcock has been named The Press-Enterprise OnCampus men’s coach of the year. The award is given to the top collegiate coach in the PE’s readership area, which includes UC Riverside, Cal State San Bernardino, Redlands, La Sierra, Riverside Community College, San Bernardino Valley College and Mt. San Jacinto College.
The last four years have been nothing short of impressive for Adcock and the Lancers, who have combined to go 178-62 with four conference championships (two GSAC, two PacWest), four national tournament appearances, three World Series berths and two World Series titles. In addition to that, the Lancers have had at least one player taken each year, eight players overall, in the MLB Draft during that span.
This year, however, may be the most gratifying. Seemingly left for dead in the race for the PacWest title after a loss at Point Loma in the second game of a regular-season-ending four-game series, the Lancers were given new life when Grand Canyon dropped a doubleheader at home to Dixie State just hours later. CBU responded two days after that with a dramatic doubleheader sweep that included two walk-off wins to clinch the PacWest title for the second straight year.
The Lancers then came out of the loser’s bracket in the NCCAA West Regional to beat Fresno Pacific twice on the final day to win the regional title and then went unblemished in six games to win the NCCAA World Series title for the second straight year, outscoring their opponents 42-7 in the process. In all, the Lancers won 12 of their final 13 games.
Adcock is a two-time NCCAA National Coach of the Year, the 2012 PacWest Coach of the Year and a three-time GSAC Coach of the Year (2006-10-11).
